For 9 years the Detroit Veteran's Center has held a winter clothing drive that begins after the Thanksgiving Holiday. The center takes in homeless veterans and provides shelter and vocational training.
The church collects winter coats, gloves, boots, hats, jeans, sweaters, long underwear, slippers, and blankets for both men and women. The items need to be in good condition and clean.
The Veteran's Center also has a need for books, toiletries, used computer equipment, and linens.
Twice a year we journey to Detroit to participate in a lunch meal with the community members of the Cass Community Methodist Church. The Cass Community Church is located at the Scott Center near the Fisher Building.
This meal is prepared at our church on the Friday night before the Saturday meal. The chairperson will purchase the food and paper products that will be needed.
Our congregation donates volunteer time, cookies, milk, money, and items for the meal. These donations help to maintain this ministry.
When Saturday arrives, the prepared food is reheated and the serving line is set at the Scott Center. Volunteers finish the meal preparations and help serve the community members who come to share in the repast. Prayers are said and then the meal is served.
